2 year olds coming out in December
Did you know that a 2 year old horse in South Africa is only allowed to run its first race from December. This makes for an exciting period as all the early developers will grace our tracks in December, whilst the late bloomers will come out hopefully in the first quarter of next year.
We strive to have our foals born as close to 1st August as possible remembering that they all turn a year older on this date in the Southern Hemisphere. So in simple terms, a horse born in August versus a horse born in December means that on the 1st August in the following year, they will both turn 1 years old- however the August foal will be 1 years old, but the December foal is essentially 8 months old- yet they will still compete against each other.
