As the sun sets (but never really goes down) on the Jozi racing season, race goers were treated to outstanding day at Turffontein Race Course this past Saturday. With between race entertainment of performances from dancers of the many cultures represented on the day, it’s a thumbs up to the event organisers who arranged for new and different entertainment between the races. It proved to be a great day out for most families on the glorious afternoon- the weather was spectacular, not a cloud in the sky and while walking through the beautifully shaded area just to the left of the winning post, one could hear the laughter and giggling of the children have the best time in the Kids Zone. Their parents were able to relax, take a walk through the different vendors and enjoy the tastes and flavours of the day.
It seemed that there definitely was excitement in the air- perhaps it was the unknown for most as to whether we would see a Triple Tiara winner, or it could have been the joy many get when watching the legendary Legal Eagle take to the track, but everyone was in high spirits whilst they waited for each race. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be for TakingThePeace, and the Geoff Woodruff trained Secret Potion, won convincingly under a well timed ride by jockey, Gunter Wrogemann in the Wilgerbosdrift S A Fillies Oaks over 2450m. Coral Fever showed pure class as he fought it out to the line with Abashiri in the R4(m) Grade 1 Premier’s Champions Challenge. The connections and trainer, Robbie Sage, were over the moon and there is no doubt that they will be a contenders to follow in the months leading up to the Vodacom Durban July.
Whilst we wait for the next 2 months to play out before July Fever hits us, the Joburg trainers will be raiding to Kwa-Zulu Natal as the great Champion’s season has kicked off already…with plenty of Grade 1 races to be won, be sure to keep an eye out for your favourite steed as we follow them with great anticipation over the next few months.
Next race meeting to look forward to is the World Sports Betting East Cape Poly Challenge and World Sports Betting East Cape Derby
