Equus Awards 2018


In  Oscar like fashion, horseracing’s elite were treated to a glamorous awards evening last night at Emperor’s Palace. From fine dining, exquisite decor and an array of entertainment, our finest equine athletes including jockeys and loyal supporters of this amazing industry were honoured for their outstanding achievements.

Every nominee deserved their place in the limelight, but it was the winners of each category that just stole the show this past season throughout South Africa. The Equus Awards is the crème de la crème of awards and we list below the winners in each category

  • Champion Two-year-old Colt –Soqrat
  • Champion Two-year-old Filly – Return Flight
  • Champion Three-year-old Colt-   Do It Again
  • Champion Three-year-old Filly- Oh Susanna (Aus)
  • Champion Older Male- Legal Eagle
  • Champion Older Filly/Mare- Nother Russia
  • Champion Sprinter – (1000 – 1200m)- Will Pays
  • Champion Miler – (1400 – 1600)- Legal Eagle
  • Champion Middle Distance – (1800 – 2200- Oh Susanna (Aus)
  • Champion Stayer (2400 and over)- It’s my Turn
  • Champion Owner- Mrs Gaynor Rupert
  • Champion Jockey & Apprentice of the Year- Lyle Hewitson
  • Champion Breeder- Klawervlei Stud
  • Champion Stallion- Silvano
  • Champion Broodmare- Strawberry Lane

It was the well deserving Justin Snaith, who won Champion Trainer award and scooped up the Horse of the Year with the Australian bred filly, Oh Susanna. Justin excelled in both Western Cape and Champion Season in Kwa-Zulu Natal, achieving some very impressive milestones, but as we all know, racing never sleeps- the new season is well and truly upon us and it won’t be long before we will be looking at the next exciting stock gracing our many tracks, keeping us engrossed, and giving us the excuse to dress up (who doesn’t love dressing up).
