It’s one of the jewels in the crown of horseracing in Port Elizabeth and the bumper weekend is officially under way at Fairview Racecourse.

With Friday serving as a curtain-raiser to the festivities on the following day, the highlight was the conclusion of the World Sports Betting East Cape Poly Challenge. The third and final leg, run over 1600m on the Polytrack was won by the combination of Our Icon and jockey Greg Cheyne.

It also meant that Sir Duke claimed the R50 000 bonus, his consistency resulting in the most number of points picked up in the three-legged series.

The horseracing action continues on Saturday with the World Sports Betting East Cape Derby, for three-year-olds over 2400m, providing the high-point of the day. It’s a race that sees the PE-based trainers look to stave off challengers from Cape Town and Durban.

Added to the action on the track will be the Mixlab Triple B Festival which will see racegoers treated to gourmet food, craft beer and performances by a number of local DJs on the day. Tickets to the area are R80 on the day.

There will also be the annual fashion show by the students from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University as they aim to walk away with the bragging rights, and more importantly cash prizes, on the day.

There will also be a number of food vendors at Fairview Racecourse and the coffee lovers will be taken care of by Mastertons. There’s also a family element to the day with kids entertainment on offer.
