Gauteng Guineas Day

The rain gods played their part on Saturday when they held off any rain so that the exciting Gauteng Guineas Day could run its course.

With twelve races carded on the day- patrons were privileged to watch some true delights take to the racecourse and we only have to wait until the 2nd March to see if we could be lining up for a Triple Crown or Triple Tiara title.

The first feature on the day- The listed Wolfpower Stakes  over 1600m was won by the in-form jockey Anton Marcus for the Johan Janse Van Rensburg yard and the Wernar family. Mike de Kock’s, Nafaayes narrowly scraped to victory in a nail biting dash to the line  from Paul Matchett’s Running Brave in the 1st leg of the Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas. It will be exciting to see these 2 go head to head in the Wilgerbosdrift Fillies Classic in a months time.

Now it wasn’t meant to be for Team de Kock, when looking for his next win in the Gauteng Guineas- came up against visiting lady trainer- Yvette Bremner’s National Park who cruised to victory with 2.7 lengths to spare. National Park has visited Joburg in recent months, with the trips being well worth it as he too won the Graham Beck Stakes (Grade 3) in November. He seemed to have plenty in the tank at the end of the race so perhaps the 1800m SA Classic will also be right up his alley. We eagerly await the nominations for this race which will close on Monday, 18th February.

The Member’s Lounge was buzzing with a gin tasting sponsored by Victoria Gin, but just when patrons thought it couldn’t get any better- a surprise appearance by the heartthrob boy band- Locnville took things to a whole new level.

Locnville a South African electro hop music duo is made up of the good looking identical twin brothers Andrew and Brian Chaplin. They were welcomed into the parade ring, experienced what it is like to be an owner and were privy to the instructions being bandied around by the trainers to the jockeys….let’s hope they put the information to good use.

We will be back in full force on Saturday, 2nd March when the 2nd leg of the series takes place.

The Member’s Lounge will once again be open, tickets available to purchase on NuTickets.
