Khaya Stables Grade 2 Diadem Stakes
Khaya Stables is once again the proud sponsor of the Diadem Stakes (Grade 2) to be held at Kenilworth Racecourse on Saturday, 23rd February. This race is arguably one of the most testing sprint races in South Africa as it is tried over the testing 1200m Kenilworth course. Dating back to 1974, it was won by Lancaster. But it was Charles Laird, now a retired trainer, who was extremely successful with this race when he won the Diadem Stakes with Nhlavini in 2001, 2002, 2005. Nhlavini ran 2nd in 2004. Charles also trained Rebel King who won this in 2007.
The 4 time L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner- Pocket Power rand 2nd in 2006. One of South Africa’s top stallions- What A Winter won this in 2011 and 2012 and Champion Sire, Captain Al won this in 2000, with his son Captain of All winning in 2014.
The Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes attracts top quality fields and has previously included Lady Christine Laidlaw’s (Khaya Stables) very own Capetown Noir who won both the Cape Guineas, Investec Cape Derby and the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate. The race itself includes some of the country’s best sprinters alongside the best classic horses.
It was previously used as a prep run for the sprinters taking place in the Cape Flying Championship and the classic horses lining up for the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate or Paddock Stakes, however it is now run after these races have taken place in January.
This year, it is a day for the family that will have you all enjoying the Seafood Village. With various types of seafood dishes on offer along with other food stalls tantalising your taste buds, it is a day not to be missed. In addition, the Summer Market with a designated kiddies entertainment area there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Of course, the most important being the full day of races on the card.
This weekend brings the curtain down on the Summer Of Champions season.
