Northern Cape RA Awards

The annual Northern Cape awards took place at the Kimberley Club on Friday 4 August where the following awards were made:

A decision was taken to expand upon the awards from this year and the Racing Association included a two year old category and a three year old category.

Two year olds    – Talk Wrench (Owner: Anton Botha and Trainer: Philip Smith)

And Bishop of Bombay (Owner: Mr C J Aucamp and Trainer: Tienie Prinsloo).  Bishop of Bombay won the Kimberley Nursery NBT race on 24 July after the decision had been made regarding this category.  An award will be made at a racemeeting in Kimberley in the near future to honour the connections.  The Racing Association apologises to all winning connections for the oversight.

Three year olds – Rock a Bye Baby (Corrie Lensley, Morgan Pillay, Mrs B M Gadsby and K&K Syndicate – Nominee Mrs K Mahabeer –

                Champion Jockey – Muzi Yeni

                Champion Trainer – Corrie Lensley

                Champion Owner – Francois du Toit

                Special Apprentice Award – Mpumelelo Mjoka

This award was started two years ago to honour the champion apprentice in Northern Cape.  Mpumelelo was second on the SA apprentice log with a total of 32 winners.  He boasts 21 winners at Flamingo Park.  He is one of the few apprentices to go overseas and ride a winner in France winning the Longines Future Racing Stars Event.  He also managed to achieve winning two races on two continents within a week which is a great achievement. 

Champion Horse of the Season – Red Special  (Owner: Francois du Toit and Trainer:  Stephanie Miller.
