World Sports Betting Matchem Stakes

It was billed as the big reveal for Durbanville Racecourse and the World Sports Betting Matchem Stakes raceday certainly lived up to its billing on the weekend.

With the stables lining up their firepower for the coming weeks as the Summer Of Champions springs to life in the Cape, the afternoon provided horseracing fans with the chance to identify horses to follow through the season.

The afternoon belonged to the Candice Bass-Robinson stable as they took out the day’s headline race with Our Mate Art while the WSB Diana Stakes was claimed by Goodtime Gal from the Mike Robinson stable and ridden by Anton Marcus.

But it wasn’t only about the racing as friends and family packed the lawn at the country course to soak in the atmosphere of the Potjie Challenge with a whopping R30 000 up for grabs in prizemoney for the best plates as judged later in the afternoon.

The bragging rights for this event, which seemed to go down a treat at the country course, belonged to the Rossouw family as their lamb and chorizo offering had the judges’ mouths watering at the end of a closely fought competition. A huge thanks to the Boer & Butcher for partnering with Kenilworth Racing to make this competition a success.

Competitors were judged on taste as well as presentation and in the end the panel decided that this dish was too delicious to pass up with The Rossouws taking home the lion’s share of the cash prize.

The other big highlight on the day was the annual Jockeys’ Chase which saw the riders pair into relay teams for a 200m dash with the biggest motivator to raise funds for charity. This year R32 000 was raised for the Cart Horse Protection Association and the race belonged to the pair of Aldo Domeyer, as yet unbeaten in this event, and Grant van Niekerk.
