Champions Day

The Forth of May- aka Champion’s Day- marked the closing of the Joburg summer racing season. The end of this highly competitive season was celebrated in fine style with a Gins ‘N Roses Festival throughout the Turffontein Racecourse. As always, Joburg’s fine winter weather was spectacular, and patrons woke up to glorious sunshine, blue skies and temperatures of around 25 degrees.
Where else in the southern hemisphere can you dress up in your summer chic dresses still in May?
It was spectacular to see such enthusiastic and elegant racegoers embrace the theme wholeheartedly, from the “seasoned” to the first timers. To culminate the atmosphere, and to remind patrons why they are celebrating, the marquee was positioned alongside the final stretch of each race, ensuring that you could feel the ground shake as the horses closed in on the finishing line. It was a day with 12 spectacular races, plenty of features, and a perfect setting to welcome the sunset over the Joburg skyline.
The elite equine athletes were however not there for a chilled afternoon, and delivered bucket loads of entertainment and thrilling finishes. Being one of South Africa’s richest race days ensured that everyone competing brought their A-game to the racecourse. But in between the excitement of the races, the Gins ‘N Roses Festival patrons enjoyed a magnitude of gin variations from the Gin pop-up bars, housing some of South Africa’s finest gin houses namely- Victoria Gin, Bloedloen, Ginifer, Ginologist and last, but certainly not least, Gin Flowstone.
And if you thought that it possibly couldn’t get better than this, picture pairing the perfect gin with a gourmet burger or the array of market style tapas from Sumting Fresh, Sushi Bus and Get Ribbed topped with some classic jazz to create the chilled out ambience.
And if the above wasn’t enough, just like our Gold Bowl contestants, the “stayers” continued their celebrations well into the night with none other than George Sax, Dj Soul Kid , Da Kruk, Dj Khoi and Rock Da Shades.
